Problem

The Radio Times and University of Sussex wanted a way to recruit large panels of TV viewers and collect structured data about their viewing habits over time. Existing diary methods were Qualtrics-based, and inconvenient to administer.

Approach

I built Screen Test as a React Native app for iOS and Android using Expo and Supabase. Participants register, then receive push notifications prompting them to log what they watched and complete short surveys. The app surfaces personalised recommendations based on popular picks and makes the logging experience feel more like a TV companion than a research tool. Supabase handles authentication, real-time data sync, and the backend API. The Radio Times branding is integrated throughout to leverage the existing trust and recognition of the publication.

Outcome

Screen Test launched as a research tool enabling Sussex University researchers to collect large-scale, longitudinal viewing data from a real-world audience. The partnership with Radio Times gave the study reach and credibility that would have been difficult to achieve through academic recruitment alone. The results are to be announced in late 2026 at the Radio Times' award ceremony.
